In the final two decades of his career, Wengenroth's landscapes became more abstract, incorporating elements of his early work within a more naturalistic landscape.

In commenting on his later work, he said "By reliquinishing a relationship to other landscape features, “close-ups” of natural forms, become effectively, all over compositions"
